Avanti Architects was retained by Ealing Tertiary College to develop a design for an Indoor Sports Centre on their Southall Centre site.
The proposal was to provide a sports facility for the students of the college and for the residents of Southall. Following consultations with the Sports Council and the London Borough of Ealing Leisure Services Department it was agreed that the new facility should be a centre of excellence for table tennis and should also contain a four-court sports hall, a fitness room, a creche and a healthy therapy unit as well as changing rooms and support facilities.
The main entrance to the College has been relocated to provide a single entrance for the College building and its Sports Centre. The bulk of the main sports hall spaces is set back from the road behind smaller scale accommodation. The reduction in scale, combined with soft landscape between the building and the street softens the appearance of the building from the housing on the opposite side of Beaconsfield Road.
The building has been designed to be energy efficient through the use of a high level of insulation, energy efficient lighting and the provision of a heat recovery system attached to the mechanical ventilation.
