Long View lies adjacent Past Field house, built in 1960 (now listed Grade II) to the design of the distinguished architect Patrick Gwynne for Dr and Mrs Salmon who partitioned portions of their land for each of their two daughters. Our commission originated in 2002 through Mr. Gwynne with whom Avanti Architects were collaborating in the restoration of his own house, The Homewood, Esher, for The National Trust. The current scheme design was commenced by Avanti following Gwynne’s death in 2003.
The brief was for a contemporary family house with a flexible living/dining/kitchen arrangement including a space for music making, four bedrooms, a workshop for piano repair, a small study and ample storage and service space. Natural daylight was a priority as well as a fluid relationship between indoors and outdoors with a covered external eating area. The relationship of the new design to the original house was considered particularly carefully. The pinwheel plan and precise setting out were designed to take maximum advantage of the southern outlook, some fine existing trees and natural features including an old Victorian rockery. The aim was to create a composition that complements the listed building in terms of form and material while having a clear identity of its own.
